Michael Robertson

"I'm Mike Robertson, a soon-to-be graduate of the Industrial Design Program at Dawson College."

Before spending my time at Dawson, I worked as a professional chef for about ten years, which granted me some incredible opportunities and experiences. Besides that, that career also gave me several transferable skills in the design world. You might ask- well, what does a chef have to do with being a designer?

First and foremost- QUALITY CONTROL. Second- ORGANIZATION. Keep your office and mind clear for efficiency's sake! Third- A SENSE OF URGENCY- we don’t have all day, all week, or all year to get stuff done. It has to happen in a timely manner. Perhaps most importantly, it’s taught me WORK ETHIC. I’m used to working 14-16 hours a day on my feet with little to no break. While others might get tired, I’ll keep going. Before my career as a chef, I completed a university degree in Environmental Studies- sustainable design is not an option for me- it’s a necessity.

 

So then you might ask, well what about Michael Robertson the designer? I have an eye for beautiful, simple, and FUNCTIONAL designs. With that appreciation, comes a restless desire to ideate, and prototype the most progressive design possible. After the last year of ‘pandemic online learning’, you CANNOT BELIEVE how EXCITED I am to start working. I simply cannot contain myself thinking about working with my hands, working in a team, applying my skills, and learning every day.

ABOUT THE "TAVANI" WATER FOUNTAIN PROJECT

The focal point of my design process all along has been to provide cyclists and park-goers an easy and trustworthy source of water, something that is seriously lacking along bike paths and in parks.  A clean design should encourage people to trust and use the fountains, rather than buying bottled water.

 

The Tavani water fountain is a practical, modern, and sculptural hydration station designed to be placed along with the city’s extensive bike path network. 

The body is a single sand-cast shell that is powder-coated. 

 

The fountain has two spouts- a bottle filler, separate from the traditional drinking spout for sanitary reasons.

 

The fountain is entirely foot-pedal operated, avoiding the use of hand-operated buttons to avoid contaminants.

 

The fountain is designed to easily hook into the city’s existing water supply lines, where it can be uninstalled for the winter months to facilitate snow removal.
